October 16th is Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Awareness Day
Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a hidden but common disability that affects 1 in 14 people causing difficulties understanding and using language for no known reason. The theme for this year is Together for DLD. By working together, we can build a better world for all with DLD.
Tips on how we can support children’s understanding:
1. Make language clear and explicit
Children benefit from language that is clear, direct and carefully taught. You can do this by:
- Giving examples.
- Showing your child what you mean.
- Giving feedback and encouragement
2. Check Understanding
Give children opportunities to show what they understand. You can use language like:
- “Tell me what we’re going to do first.”
- “Can you show me?”
- “What do you think that word means?”
3. Give language a visual
Visual supports can make important information stand out and provide another way for children to access what they’re learning.
4. Help your child become their own advocate
One of the most important long-term goals we can work towards is helping children understand and communicate what they need. Self-awareness and self-advocacy can help children become more active participants in their education and build greater independence over time.
